Whether you are updating your current home, getting it ready to put on the market, or planning for your new home, planning your window treatments takes time. Before adding any window treatments be sure to explore the many different available options that not only suit your style but work best in your home.
Following are 4 simple ideas to get you started:
Length - No matter your ceiling height, consider hanging your drapery as close as possible to the ceiling. If your ceiling height is 8 feet high be sure to buy drapery panels that are 96” in length. If you already have drapery panels that are shorter, simply sew an extra strip of complimentary fabric to the bottom. The extra length will create an illusion of height and completely change the final look.
Create Layers - Try hanging 3 layers of window treatments. Create the first layer with instant privacy by hanging a blind inside the window frame itself. Then create two additional layers by installing two single drapery rods or one double drapery rod above the window (and as close to the ceiling as possible). The inside drapery layer will be the one you move back and forth should you wish additional privacy. Try using a light neutral fabric or sheers for this inside layer. The outside layer will be the one for “show”. This layer can stay in place and remains decorative to give the room that luxurious look and feel. Try using a heavier fabric and consider incorporating a pattern that matches the rest of your decor.
Positioning - Consider hanging your drapery rods at least 1-2 feet further out from the actual window frame. Your window will instantly look wider and more impressive.
Create Fullness - This is where most homeowners have difficulty. You can follow all of the above steps but if you have not bought enough drapery panels your window treatment will lack “pop”. Rule of thumb for drapery is 2.5-3 times the width of your window. Measure the width of your window and multiply that number by 2.5 or 3. This will give you the total width required for drapery coverage to complete your look. Remember cold air comes in your home through windows. Those extra layers of window treatments also help with insulating your home.
